Talk about drawing and most adults will tell you they “can’t draw.” This doesn’t really make any sense, though. Drawing isn’t something you either can or can’t do: instead, drawing ability develops along a continuum, where the infant learning to grip a crayon is at Level 0 and a master draughtsman is Level 10. If you can hold a pencil and make a mark, you must fall somewhere on this spectrum. Talent is something we can make for ourselves. The ingredients are enthusiasm, sound knowledge and consistent practice. The ability to draw is not a mysterious gift that springs from a mystical ether. It is a skill we develop, over time and with patience. This workshop aims to show you that the basic principles of drawing are simple, and anyone can learn them. There are many ways to draw, however during this workshop I will introduce you to some of the most accessible techniques, while also giving you an enriched, rounded appreciation of this art. You will be led, step by step, through exercises which will not only enable you to build your skills but also help you to understand the underlying principles at work. The discipline of drawing is rich enough for a lifetime of discovery and delight, and for that reason I will always consider myself a student. However, throughout the workshop, I will put on my teacher’s cap and endeavour to pass on what I have learnt so far. Graphite is the chosen medium for this class. **All drawing materials are supplied to students for the use in this class. I'll also be hauling my toolbox to each session which gives an opportunity to introduce some additional tools that I use. Please note: A minimum of three students are required for the class to go ahead.
