I'll also be hauling my toolbox to each session which gives an opportunity to introduce some additional tools that I use. Suitable for all levels / 16+ years old students welcome Session 1 Much like turning a guitar, we'll look at the most appropriate way to draw from life. Abbreviating what we see into something manageable. We will be copying from a flat image, finding key locations within the reference and refining our powers of observation as we go. We will be using the Sight Size method, a traditional sight-size method (where the artwork and object appear the same size from a set viewing distance) alongside comparative measurement. The first exercise will be a basic introduction to comparative measuring, completing an image as best we can so that one side mirrors the other. Session 2 Graduating from that introduction, we will go one step further and take on the task of copying an image as accurately as we can. Session 3 Picking up from where we left off, we will start to build on the points we have correctly positioned to develop our copy even further. Continuously checking the drawing, the image grows slowly and meticulously much in the same manner that our creative awareness grows. Working within the contour, things progress and we start to see a likeness emerge. The goal of sight size is not necessarily a finished drawing, but rather that we have internalised the methods by which we can draw accurately. So, don't worry if a drawing isn't completed by this session. If your character of line has changed and you have started to build confidence in this new way of going about picture making then that is an except foundation for what comes next. Future lessons will explain ways to take our line work into the next stage, that of adding light and shadow.
