DLAB's Roots

Draw Like a Boss - illustration

I'm Ash, writer and illustror behind the Draw Like a Boss book series.

My passion lies in sharing my knowledge of drawing in a unique and captivating manner. This series is dedicated to empowering aspiring artists aged 11 and above, hailing from diverse backgrounds and possessing varying levels of artistic prowess, whether they're newcomers or seasoned practitioners.

During my time as an art student, I found myself dissatisfied with the conventional curriculum structure. After completing my university education, I embarked on a mission to craft a more accessible and comprehensible method of teaching drawing. In this endeavor, I drew inspiration from my own experiences, drawing from the excitement I had felt while reading adventure stories and immersing myself in video games. These memories served as the foundation for the distinctive style of Draw Like a Boss.

In 2013, I embarked on the DLAB project, launching it through the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform.

Over the years, the project has cultivated a remarkably strong and devoted fanbase. With each successive Kickstarter campaign, our fans return, knowing that DLAB books consistently deliver high-quality content and impeccable manufacturing. Self-publishing has been an incredibly rewarding journey, marked by unexpected encounters with artists I deeply admire. The list includes luminaries such as Pendleton Ward (the creative mind behind Cartoon Network's Adventure Time), Brian Fargo (of Interplay Entertainment), Tim Schafer (associated with LucasArts), Ryan North (creator of Dinosaur Comics), Kate Beaton (the talent behind Hark A Vagrant), as well as seasoned artists from revered studios like George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic, Pixar, and Disney.

These influential figures not only noticed DLAB but also actively supported the project, taking it upon themselves to spread the word. Some even provided endorsements that I proudly feature on the back covers of my books.

The vibrant DLAB community holds a special place in my heart, and as a token of my gratitude for their unwavering support, I continue to create new educational tools and quirky products. As of now, I'm in the midst of producing a third book, and we've just released a second deck of Bicycle cards, marking our ongoing commitment to fostering creativity and learning.

So if you're considering adding DLAB to your bookshelf then, don't just take my word for it.
