The mandala begins with a cross. A vertical line with a horizontal line drawn through the center. Using a compass, I then make circles of various sizes that I intent to use as breaks and intervals for patterns to begin and end.

The patterns become increasingly complex and this process is made so simple by the guides we have in place. Free handing this would only end in a wobbly mandala that doesn't conform to any idea of symmetry.

The process of shading in this image feels almost like colouring, it's that simple. Nothing too demanding here and it's an excellent stress reliever too. If you find yourself needing to get your drawing practice in but don't want to commit to intense study then this is a highly recommended activity.
